Changing
Face of Myocardial Drug Resistance

After a
dramatic decline in the incidence of tuberculosis in the second half
of last century, the epidemiology of TB has changed in the 1980s. Both
the number of cases and incidence of TB have increased since 1985, not
only in the developing countries, but also in the developed ones. The
two important problems that have added fuel to the problem of TB are
the emergence of drug resistant mycobacteria and the HIV epidemic.
Cornerstone of tuberculosis control efforts are the identification of
active cases of tuberculosis and rapid treatment with antituberculous
medication to render these cases noninfectious and there by preventing
spread of tuberculosis. But this is not always possible, especially
when growing incidence of drug resistance is being reported from most
parts of the world. When the proportion of mutants resistant to a
critical concentration of an antituberculous drug reaches certain
level (1% for most anti-tuberculous drugs), therapeutic success is
less likely to occur and population is considered resistant to that
drug.

Abstract:
The present study was carried out to assess the role of
ultrasonography and computed tomography in evaluation of pulmonary and
mediastinal lesions abutting the chest wall. A total of 20 patients
with peripheral lung or mediastinal opacities on chest Roentgenogram
were included. The diagnosis in each case was confirmed by
histopathological examination of specimen obtained by guided
percutaneous needle aspiration (PCNA). Both ultrasound and CT were
able to detect lung tumors, inflammatory lesions and mediastinal
tumors with high sensitivity and specificity. Though computed
tomography was superior to ultrasonography, the later was found to be
a reasonable alternative and when combined with PCNA, had excellent
diagnostic efficacy.
